Welcome to Microsoft Word Expert
Eight weeks of advanced Word — templates, macros, mail merge, advanced styles, content controls, indexes, custom building blocks — leading to the Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Expert (MO-111) certification. The Expert course covers features that genuinely extend Word, not just deepen what you learned at the Associate level.
At a Glance
The Expert course is the second half of the Word certification track. You’ve finished MO-110 Associate; now you’re learning the features that distinguish power users — automation with macros, mail-merging hundreds of letters at once, building custom content controls, indexing long documents, and creating reusable building blocks that travel with you between projects.
What This Course Is
For MO-110, you learned to build documents from scratch. For MO-111 Expert, you learn to build infrastructure — the reusable structures that make you faster, more consistent, and harder to mistake for someone who “just uses Word.”
The shift in mindset is the real lesson. An Associate user opens a blank document and reapplies their letterhead, fonts, styles, and margins each time. An Expert user opens a template they configured once and inherits all of it automatically. The Expert spends 30 minutes building a template and saves five minutes per document forever after. After a year of professional use, the template pays for itself thousands of times over.
Across eight weeks, you’ll build a portfolio of Expert-level artifacts: a Reusable Business Letter Template, a Protected Employee Onboarding Packet, an Advanced Styled Annual Report with custom theme, a Long-Form Document with Index & Custom Captions, a Custom Building Blocks & AutoText Pack, a Mail-Merged Personalized Letter Batch, a Macro-Enabled Form Document, and a Cumulative Expert Practice Document. Each piece is a real artifact you could put in front of a hiring manager.
The Certification You’ll Earn
🎓 Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Expert (MO-111)
The Expert credential demonstrates advanced Word skills — features that go beyond everyday document creation into automation, customization, and large-document management. It’s the natural next credential after MO-110 and one of the most-recognized signals for advanced Microsoft Office competency on a résumé.
The Four MO-111 Objective Domains
The MO-111 exam covers four objective domains with the weight ranges shown. Each domain maps to specific weeks of the course. Weights are ranges, not single percentages — Certiport calibrates within each range, so your specific exam version may lean higher or lower within the band shown.
Manage Document Options & Settings
Templates, version recovery, Compare and Combine, Quick Access Toolbar customization, Restrict Editing, password protection, language settings, default font changes.
Covered: Weeks 1-2Use Advanced Editing & Formatting Features
Mail merge (data sources, merge fields, rules), advanced Find & Replace with wildcards, paste options, advanced formatting features that go beyond Associate-level work.
Covered: Week 3Create Custom Document Elements
Custom styles, advanced themes, building blocks & AutoText, indexes (entries, cross-references, formatting), advanced captions and table of figures, bibliographies. The heaviest domain by exam weight — almost a third of the test.
Covered: Weeks 4-5Use Advanced Word Features
Macros (record, edit, run), VBA basics, content controls (text, date, drop-down, picture), advanced form fields, advanced collaboration features beyond Associate-level Track Changes.
Covered: Weeks 6-8Week by Week — What You’ll Build
Eight content weeks plus an exam week. Each week pairs new learning with a portfolio deliverable — the project you’ll have in your hands at the end of Friday.
How You’ll Build and Practice
Each week follows the same four-chunk structure used throughout MO-110 — the rhythm is familiar even though the content is harder.
Lesson
The new concepts, command paths, and exam-relevant context. Read-through plus screenshots. The “what” and “why” of every Expert feature.
Practice
A small, targeted drill on the week’s most-tested commands. The exam-rehearsal chunk — fast, narrow, and diagnostic.
Build
The signature project. A real artifact (template, mail-merged batch, macro-enabled form, etc.) that exercises every sub-objective the week covers.
Wrap Up
Knowledge Check, completion checklist, and a preview of next week. Confirms readiness before moving on.
What’s Expected of You
The Expert course expects more than MO-110 did. The features are harder, the projects are denser, and the time per week is genuinely higher. Set this expectation early so the workload isn’t a surprise.
Show up to every Lesson
Expert features build on each other faster than Associate features did. Missing a Lesson and “catching up later” is much harder here — the live demo is the difference between confusion and clarity.
Build every Build project
Reading about macros doesn’t teach you macros; recording one does. The signature projects are non-negotiable. They are the only path to muscle memory on Expert features.
Practice between weeks
Open Word on your own time. Run a Practice drill twice. Re-record a macro to see it again. Five minutes of repetition beats fifty minutes of re-reading.
Submit on time
Same expectations as MO-110. Files named correctly. Both .docx/.dotx and PDF when required. Resubmissions accepted within one week.
Use the Wrap-Up Knowledge Check seriously
Below 8/12 means the Lesson didn’t land. Re-read the Lesson chunk before moving to the next week — the gap will compound otherwise.
Ask early when stuck
Macros, mail merge, and content controls have specific places where students get stuck. Your teacher has seen the exact stuck-point you’re at. Ask the day you notice — not the day before submission.

🚀 Week 1 starts with Templates, Versions & Document Options
The first week of Expert preparation introduces the “make Word your own” cluster — modifying templates so every new document inherits your formatting, recovering older versions, comparing and combining documents, and customizing the Quick Access Toolbar and ribbon. Your Week 1 portfolio piece will be a Reusable Business Letter Template you can use for real work going forward.
Open Week 1 — start with the Lesson chunk to set up the conceptual frame, then move through Practice, Build, and Wrap Up. Each chunk is designed to fit a single class period.
