Welcome to Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop

An 18-week course that prepares you for an industry-recognized Adobe credential and gives you a real design portfolio along the way. By Week 9 you can take the certification exam. By Week 18 you’ll have built work you’d actually deliver to a client.

18 weeks 150+ instructional hours ACP Certification Portfolio Capstone

What This Course Is

This course has two connected goals. First, it prepares you for the Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop credential — an industry-recognized certification issued by Certiport on behalf of Adobe. Second, it takes you past the exam — through nine additional weeks of Advanced Studio work — into the real Photoshop capabilities that set strong designers apart from merely certified ones.

This is not a tour of Photoshop menus. It’s a progressive build of real design skill through projects that produce deliverables you would actually deliver to a client, a community, or a portfolio. Every week produces at least one portfolio-worthy artifact. By Week 18 you have a full body of work — a capstone campaign, a published portfolio, and the certification to back it up.

The Credential — Adobe Certified Professional

Adobe Certified Professional · Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop

One credential. One exam. Industry-recognized.

Unlike some Microsoft Office tracks that have separate Associate and Expert tiers, Photoshop has a single Adobe Certified Professional credential. The exam is performance-based — you sit at a real Photoshop document and complete real tasks. Adobe recommends about 150 hours of instruction and hands-on experience before testing, which is exactly what this course delivers.

Exam length ~50 minutes

The Five ACP Exam Domains

Every week of this course traces back to one or more of these five domains. They’re the official Adobe objectives the exam tests:

  • Domain 1 — Working in the Design Industry. Briefs, audiences, copyright, design principles, and the vocabulary of digital imaging.
  • Domain 2 — Project Setup and Interface. The Photoshop workspace, document setup, resolution and color modes, importing assets, and managing swatches, gradients, and patterns.
  • Domain 3 — Organizing Documents. Layers, layer types, layer comps, masks (layer, clipping, vector, alpha channel), and the difference between destructive and non-destructive editing.
  • Domain 4 — Creating and Modifying Visual Elements. Raster and vector tools, type, selections, transformations, retouching, and filters. This is the biggest single domain.
  • Domain 5 — Publishing Digital Media. Preparing assets for delivery, choosing the right file format and color profile, and exporting for web, print, mobile, and video.
📌 The exam tests by purpose, not by command name. A task on the exam will say “isolate the subject from this background” — not “use the Object Selection tool then refine in Select and Mask.” Memorizing where tools live doesn’t help on the real exam. Familiarity with the interface and the design problem it solves does. That’s how this course is structured.

🎯 The Five Exam Objective Domains

The Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop exam is organized into five official objective domains. Every week of this course maps to one or more of them:

  • 1 Working in the Design Industry
  • 2 Project Setup & Interface
  • 3 Organizing Documents
  • 4 Creating & Modifying Visual Elements
  • 5 Publishing Digital Media
How you’ll practice — the Knowledge Pillars Platform. As you complete each objective throughout the course, you’ll practice it with objective-based practice tests on the Knowledge Pillars Practice Platform. In Week 8 you’ll complete 2 full Practice Tests and 2 Exam Simulators — scoring 80% or higher on the simulators means you’re ready to pass the exam.

The 18-Week Journey — Five Phases

The 18 weeks break into five phases. Each phase has a different rhythm and a different goal. The Associate Core weeks (3–7) are the most intense — that’s where you cover all five ACP domains in depth. The Advanced Studio weeks (10–17) are about going past the exam into the real skills working designers use every day.

Weeks 1–2

Foundations

Get comfortable inside Photoshop. Build interface fluency. Learn how creative briefs and source rights work before you start designing.

Weeks 3–7

Associate Core

The five ACP domains, one project per week. Document setup, layers, selections and masks, type and vectors, retouching and filters.

Weeks 8–9

Certification

Week 8 is a full practice exam under timed conditions. Week 9 is the real ACP attempt at Certiport.

Weeks 10–17

Advanced Studio

Eight weeks past the exam. Camera Raw, advanced compositing, retouching, painting, automation, motion, cross-app workflows, web publishing.

Week 18

Capstone Showcase

A live portfolio presentation. Your best work from the year, presented to an audience.

Curriculum Map — All 18 Weeks

Here’s where you’ll be each week. Every project is real — designed to produce something you’d actually use, deliver, or include in a portfolio. The exam happens in Week 9; the capstone showcase happens in Week 18.

What You’ll Build

This course is built around real deliverables. Every week you produce something — and most of it goes straight into your portfolio. By the time you reach the Week 18 showcase, you’ll have 17 portfolio pieces plus a full capstone campaign.

Week 1
📐 Personal Tool Reference Deck

A 5-artboard PSD reference you’ll use all course. Your first portfolio file.

Week 3
🎨 Branded Asset Kit

A multi-artboard brand kit with swatches, gradients, and patterns for a real or fictional brand.

Week 5
✂️ Clean Composite Cutout Set

Subject cutouts with refined edges. The selections-and-masks foundation for every composite that follows.

Week 6
🎤 Text-Hierarchy Poster

An 11×17″ poster for an event in your chosen theme. Real typography, real shapes, real print-ready.

Week 11
🌆 Composite Advertising Poster

Past-the-exam compositing. Combine multiple sources into one believable scene.

Week 13
🖌️ Painted Illustration

Custom brushes, layer blending, painting from scratch. The expressive end of Photoshop.

Week 15
🎬 Animated GIF & Video Ad

Photoshop’s timeline-based motion features. A short ad-style video and a looping GIF.

Week 18
🏆 Capstone Campaign & Showcase

A full multi-deliverable campaign in your chosen theme, presented live to an audience.

Choose Your Theme

For Weeks 1–3, your instructor will provide creative briefs so you can focus on building Photoshop fluency. From Week 4 onward, you choose your theme — the audience, subject matter, and visual world your projects live in. Picking a theme you actually care about makes the work better and the learning faster.

Photography & Visual Arts
Gaming & Esports
Music & Performing Arts
Sports & Athletics
Technology & Innovation
Community & Causes
Personal Career
Your own theme
📌 You can change your theme. Locking in a theme at Week 4 doesn’t lock you in for the year. If your Sports theme stops feeling right at Week 11, shift to something that does. The theme is yours.

How You’ll Be Assessed

Every project this course is graded against the same five-dimension rubric. You’ll see it Week 1 and use it every week — including self-assessment before you submit. Knowing the rubric lets you check your own work to the same standard your teacher will.

The Five Rubric Dimensions

  • Task Completion & Accuracy (35%) — Did you actually finish what the brief asked for?
  • Feature Choice & Method (20%) — Did you use the right Photoshop feature (non-destructive layers, smart objects, type styles) instead of working around it?
  • Document Design & Accessibility (20%) — Does the work read clearly and meet design fundamentals?
  • Communication & Purpose (15%) — Does the work do its job for the audience it was designed for?
  • Professionalism & Efficiency (10%) — Are filenames correct, layers named, File Info set, work polished?

Readiness Bars

Throughout the course, you’ll hit readiness bars at Weeks 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15, and 18. These are checkpoints that tell you whether you’re on track for the next big milestone. If you’re below the bar, you’ll get targeted help — not a penalty. Below-bar weeks are common and easy to recover from when caught early.

📊 What “good” looks like. Across the whole course, aim for ≥80% on a sustained basis. That tracks with the ACP first-attempt pass rate target. You don’t have to hit 80% every single week — Week 1 is often a 3-3 baseline (Proficient) for most students, and that’s fine. The pattern over time is what matters.

What You Need

Photoshop (Desktop)

Adobe Photoshop on Windows or Mac. Your school provides the Creative Cloud license; you sign in with your Adobe ID. Photoshop on the web and Photoshop on iPad are useful companions but the ACP exam tests against desktop Photoshop.

Adobe ID

An Adobe ID linked to your school account. Your teacher and IT will get you set up Week 1. If you have a personal Adobe ID from home, you may need to use the school one for class work.

Storage

Adobe Creative Cloud storage is included with your license — your PSDs save to the cloud automatically if you use Cloud Documents. Also plan for local backup: PSD files can be 50–500 MB each.

Portfolio Folder

A local folder called photoshop-acp-portfolio on your computer or a personal drive. Back up every week’s files there in addition to LMS submission. By Week 18 this folder is your portfolio.

Source-rights respect

You’ll learn the legal basics of image use in Week 2. Until then, default to Adobe Stock free, Creative Commons, your own photos, or instructor-provided images. Never paste random images from search results.

Time

About 8 hours per week — 5 in-class guided hours and 3 independent practice hours. Some weeks are lighter (Week 1 is intentionally low-pressure). Some weeks are heavier (Week 8 practice exam, Week 18 capstone).

The Course File Naming Convention

You’ll use the same file naming pattern for every assignment for 18 weeks. This is how professionals name files. Starting now saves you hours of renaming later — and by Week 18, every file in your portfolio sorts cleanly by week and project.

The Pattern

lastname-firstname_week##_project-name.ext

All lowercase. No spaces. Hyphens inside name parts, underscores between parts. Two-digit week number (so week01 sorts before week10). Extension matches the file type (.psd, .pdf, .docx).

A Real Example

If your name is Jordan Smith and you’re submitting the Week 1 Tool Reference Deck:

  • smith-jordan_week01_tool-reference-deck.psd
  • smith-jordan_week01_tool-reference-deck.pdf
  • smith-jordan_week01_reflection.docx
📌 You’ll see this convention everywhere this course. Every Build chunk reminds you of the rules. The Week 1 Knowledge Check tests recognition of correct vs incorrect filenames. By Week 4 you’ll name files this way without thinking.

After This Course

Earning the ACP-VDP credential gives you a foundation that transfers to every other Adobe Creative Cloud app. Many programs follow this course with a complementary Adobe credential in Semester 2:

  • Visual Design Using Adobe Illustrator — Vector illustration, logo design, scalable graphics, typography-as-artwork. Natural next step if you enjoyed Week 6 (typography & vectors).
  • Print & Digital Media Publication Using Adobe InDesign — Multi-page layout, master pages, styles, long-form publication. Natural next step if you want to present your photo portfolio in published form.
  • Digital Video Using Adobe Premiere Pro — For students whose work leans toward motion and recorded media. Natural next step if Week 15 (motion in Photoshop) was your favorite.

The design principles, source-rights habits, and file-discipline patterns you learn here all transfer. You won’t be starting over in a Semester 2 credential — you’ll be specializing.

Ready to start?

Head to Week 1 in your LearnDash sidebar. Week 1 is intentionally low-pressure — its job is to take the edge off Photoshop, not to grade hard. By Friday you’ll have your first three portfolio files and your name on a real PSD.
