Course Overview · C Coding Specialist

C Coding Specialist

A complete journey from your very first line of C to writing efficient, well-structured programs. Across nine units you’ll master the language’s lexical elements and data types, combine values into expressions, control program flow, organize code into functions, work with text and matrices, read and write files, and take direct control of dynamic memory with pointers and linked lists — building toward an industry-recognized certification.

Welcome to the Course

This course takes you from absolute beginner to confident C programmer. You won’t just memorize syntax — you’ll learn to think like a developer: breaking problems down, modeling them in code, managing memory deliberately, and writing programs that are both fast and reliable.

Each unit ends with a hands-on project that puts your new skills to work, and everything aligns to the C Coding Specialist (CCS) certification exam.

🗺 Course Roadmap

📚 Units in This Course

Unit 1

Lexical Elements & Program Structure

Meet the building blocks of every C program — identifiers, keywords, and constants — and see how they come together in the structure of a source file you can compile and run.

2 Lessons · ~3 Hours
Unit 2

Data Types

Work with C’s primitive data types and build derivative types: enum, union, and struct, arrays, pointers, and type qualifiers like const.

3 Lessons · ~5 Hours
Unit 3

Expressions & Operators

Combine variables and constants into valid expressions using assignment, arithmetic, logical, and pointer operators, plus conditional (?:) expressions.

2 Lessons · ~3 Hours
Unit 4

Statements & Flow Control

Make programs act and steer the flow of those actions with labels, if and switch, blocks, while/do/for, and goto, break, continue, return, and typedef.

3 Lessons · ~5 Hours
Unit 5

Functions

Bring order to programs by splitting code into sub-tasks: function declarations, definitions and calls, parameters, recursion, static and nested functions, and the main() function.

3 Lessons · ~5 Hours
Unit 6

Strings of Characters

Work with text: declare and define strings, create new strings dynamically, and perform concatenation, searching, and substring operations — including arrays of strings.

2 Lessons · ~4 Hours
Unit 7

Matrices

Handle multidimensional arrays with real algorithms: transposition, addition and multiplication, checking for identity, and extracting sub-matrices.

2 Lessons · ~3 Hours
Unit 8

File I/O Operations

Store and access data in non-volatile memory: text and binary files, opening and reading, writing, appending, modifying, and closing, and saving structures to binary files.

2 Lessons · ~4 Hours
Unit 9

Linked Lists

Work with dynamically allocated data structures: single linked lists, stacks and queues, and double linked lists — the payoff of everything you’ve learned about pointers and memory.

3 Lessons · ~4 Hours

💡 What You’ll Be Able to Do

💻 Write Real C

Go from Hello World to full programs — declaring variables, building expressions, and structuring source files the way professionals do.

📍 Manage Memory Directly

Use pointers, type qualifiers, and dynamic allocation to understand exactly where your data lives — the low-level control that makes C so powerful.

🧩 Structure Programs with Functions

Break problems into sub-tasks with functions, parameters, and recursion, and model data with structures, unions, and enumerations.

💾 Work with Text, Matrices & Files

Process strings, compute with multidimensional arrays, and read and write both text and binary files for lasting storage.

🎯 Pass the Exam

Cover all 37 exam objectives across the nine units, building directly toward your C Coding Specialist certification.

📝 How the Course Works

Every unit follows the same rhythm, so you always know what to expect:

Piece What It Is
Unit OverviewA map of the unit — the lessons, the exam objectives covered, and how the pieces fit together.
LessonsBite-sized lessons that teach concepts with explanations, code examples, and practice. Lessons group closely related exam objectives so each idea gets the space it needs.
Unit ProjectA hands-on coding project that pulls the whole unit together and proves you can apply what you learned.
Exam ObjectivesEvery lesson is tagged to the CCS certification objectives, so you can track exactly what you’ve mastered.
Study Tip: Start each unit with its Overview page, work the lessons in order, then complete the project before moving on. The course is designed to build on itself — skipping ahead usually means circling back.

🚀 Ready to Begin?

Start with Unit 1: Lexical Elements & Program Structure

Your journey starts at the very beginning — no prior coding experience needed. In Unit 1 you’ll learn:

  • What lexical elements are and how they are used
  • How to name things with identifiers and recognize C’s reserved keywords
  • How to write and use constants in your code
  • How the pieces come together in the structure of a program you can compile and run
