Week 6 – Practice
Object-Insertion Speed Drill
Project A — Object-Insertion Speed Drill
The challenge: insert, format, and alt-text five different graphic object types in under 10 minutes. The MO-110 exam is timed; Domain 5 has 16 sub-objectives across 4 groups, and the exam rewards students who can navigate the Insert tab quickly. This drill builds that speed.
You'll work in a blank Word document on your own machine. The five stations below tell you what to insert, format, and alt-text at each step. Use the timer below to pace yourself. Then come back here and complete the 5-question recognition check to confirm your understanding.
Drill Timer
Press Start when you open Word and are ready to begin. Press Pause if you need to stop briefly (don't game it). The timer shows your current time and turns yellow at 8 minutes (within target), orange at 10 minutes (at target), red past 10 (over target).
The Five Stations
Insert + Format + Alt Text — Five Object Types in Under 10 Minutes
Open a blank Word document. Work through the five stations in order. Tick the checkbox next to each station as you complete it.
🟦 Shape
Insert: a rounded rectangle. Path: Insert → Shapes → Rectangles → Rounded Rectangle. Click-drag a box about 2"×1" anywhere on the page.
Format: right-click the shape → Add Text. Type "Step 1." Apply any Shape Style from the gallery (Shape Format → Shape Styles).
Alt Text: right-click → View Alt Text. Type a one-sentence description (e.g., "Rounded rectangle labeled 'Step 1' as the first step in a process diagram.")
🖼️ Picture (from Stock Images)
Insert: a stock picture. Path: Insert → Pictures → Stock Images. Search "lightbulb" (or any topic). Pick one. Click Insert.
Format: click the picture → Picture Format tab → apply any Picture Style from the gallery (e.g., Soft Edge Oval, Drop Shadow Rectangle).
Alt Text: right-click → View Alt Text. Type a one-sentence description of what the picture actually shows (don't write "lightbulb" alone — describe it).
📊 SmartArt (Process layout)
Insert: a Process SmartArt. Path: Insert → SmartArt → Process → Basic Process. Click OK.
Format: open the Text Pane (SmartArt Design → Text Pane). Fill in 3 nodes — any 3-step sequence works ("Plan → Build → Ship"). Apply any color set (SmartArt Design → Change Colors).
Alt Text: right-click the SmartArt frame → View Alt Text. Type a one-sentence description naming the diagram type AND the steps.
⭐ Icon
Insert: an icon. Path: Insert → Icons. Search "star" (or any topic). Pick one. Click Insert.
Format: click the icon → Graphics Format tab → apply any Graphic Style or change the fill color.
Alt Text: right-click → View Alt Text. Type a brief description (e.g., "Yellow star icon used as a decorative bullet marker.")
📝 Text Box
Insert: a text box. Path: Insert → Text Box → Simple Text Box (or Draw Text Box for a custom-sized one).
Format: click inside; type a 1-sentence "key insight" or quote. Click the text box border → Shape Format → apply any Shape Style.
Alt Text: right-click the text box border → View Alt Text. Type a brief description summarizing what the box contains.
Scoring
When all 5 stations are checked, your final time appears below. Compare to the bands:
| Band | Time | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 🏆 Exemplary | Under 6:00 | Exam-ready recognition speed. You navigate the Insert tab without thinking about it. Domain 5 will not slow you down on the MO-110. |
| ✓ Proficient | 6:00 – 10:00 | Hits the framework target. Solid recognition; some thinking time per object. Continue practicing this week to push faster. |
| 📚 Developing | Over 10:00 | You know the features but they aren't yet automatic. Re-read the Lesson chunk Section 1 and try the drill again. Most students improve dramatically on attempt 2. |
Recognition Check — 5 Questions
After completing the speed drill, take this 5-question recognition check. Tests whether you can identify the right ribbon path and feature name without doing the operation. Each gives instant feedback.
1. The task says: "Insert a rotatable 3D object from Microsoft's stock library." Which command?
2. You inserted a picture. The task says: "Isolate the subject by removing the surrounding background." Which command?
3. The task says: "Capture a custom rectangular region of your screen and insert it." Which command?
4. You inserted a SmartArt graphic and need to populate the nodes with text content. Fastest way?
5. The task says: "Add alternative text to this image describing what it shows." Which command?
5.1.3. Q2 = 5.2.3. Q3 = 5.1.5. Q4 = 5.3.3. Q5 = 5.4.3. A student who gets all five right has mapped the major Domain 5 paths into recognition memory. Combine that with the speed drill performance and Domain 5 is largely under control.
