Week 5 – Wrap Up
Verify, Quiz, Submit
Self-Assessment Rubric
Same five-dimension rubric as Weeks 1–4, applied to Week 5's deliverables. Use this to self-evaluate before submitting.
| Dimension | Weight | What "Proficient" looks like this week |
|---|---|---|
| Task Completion & Accuracy | 35% | 3-5 page report; H1 + 3+ H2's + 3+ H3's all using styles; 3+ footnotes correctly numbered with cited sources; auto-generated TOC at start with 3 levels visible; TOC updated at least once; Quick Check 5/5; structure paragraph 100-150 words; verification checklist honestly completed. |
| Feature Choice & Method | 20% | Heading styles applied via gallery (no manual bolding); footnotes inserted via References → Insert Footnote (no manually typed numbers); TOC built via Automatic Table 1 (no manual table); F9/Update Field used for TOC refresh; Show/Hide on throughout build. |
| Document Design & Accessibility | 20% | Heading hierarchy is genuinely useful (sections grouped meaningfully); TOC accurately reflects structure; PDF matches .docx (especially TOC and footnote layout); page numbers consistent. |
| Communication & Purpose | 15% | Topic is researched (not just summarized from one source); footnotes attribute real sources; structure paragraph defends the chosen organization; report is actually informative to a reader new to the topic. |
| Professionalism & Efficiency | 10% | Filenames correct. Document Properties populated. Verification checklist matches actual file with location references. No manual workarounds where features exist (the most common Week-5 manual workaround: manually typing TOC entries instead of using Automatic Table). |
Your Week 5 Portfolio Submission
Three files this week. Same naming convention. Same submission process you've used the past four weeks.
📦 Files to Submit This Week
🎯 Where to Submit
-
Open the Week 5 module in your LMS. Two assignments: Research Report and Structure & Checklist.
-
Upload to each assignment:
- Research Report assignment → upload both the .docx and .pdf
- Structure & Checklist assignment → upload the .docx
-
Verify filenames after upload. Re-upload anything that doesn't match the convention.
-
Save backups in your local
word-certification-portfoliofolder alongside Weeks 1–4. -
Read all teacher feedback from Week 4 if you haven't already. The Week 5 work builds directly on heading-style mastery from Week 3 and the structural-feature mindset from Week 4.
Knowledge Check
Five questions to confirm Week 5 mastery. Retake as many times as you like.
1. You added a new heading to your document but the TOC doesn't show it. Why?
2. A document has six bold, large-font "headings" — but only three of them have Heading 1 applied through the Styles gallery. The other three are just bolded and enlarged manually. What does the auto-generated TOC show?
3. You want your TOC to show only Heading 1 and Heading 2 entries — no Heading 3's. Where do you set this?
4. You inserted footnotes throughout a document with the default Continuous numbering. The publisher now requires "Restart each page" numbering. How do you switch?
5. A document has 7 footnotes. The style guide now requires endnotes (at the document end). What's the fastest correct fix?
Troubleshooting — Common Week 5 Problems
-
"My TOC is missing some headings." Click on each missing heading. Look at the Styles gallery — almost certainly says "Normal" instead of "Heading 1/2/3." Apply the correct heading style. Then click in the TOC, press F9, choose "Update entire table." The missing entries appear.
-
"I changed a heading but the TOC still shows the old text." TOCs don't auto-update. Click in the TOC. Press F9. Pick "Update entire table." Click OK. The new text appears.
-
"My footnote numbers restarted at 1 in the middle of the document." Open the Footnote & Endnote dialog (launcher arrow at bottom-right of Footnotes group). Set Numbering back to "Continuous." Click Apply. Numbers re-flow.
-
"I deleted footnote text but the reference mark stayed in the body." You deleted from the wrong place. Always delete the reference mark (the superscript number) in the body — Word removes the note text automatically and renumbers. Find the orphaned reference mark and delete it from the body.
-
"My TOC shows weird formatting — wrong fonts, no dotted leaders." The default formatting may have been overridden. References → Table of Contents → Custom Table of Contents. Confirm "From template" is selected in the Formats dropdown, Tab leader is dotted, Show page numbers and Right align page numbers are checked. Click OK → Yes to replace.
-
"I want the TOC to show 4 levels but it only shows 3." Custom Table of Contents → Show levels → set to 4 (or whatever depth you want). Click OK → Yes to replace. (You'll also need to actually use Heading 4 somewhere in your document for level-4 entries to appear.)
-
"My PDF lost the TOC formatting — it's just plain text in the export." Try File → Export → Create PDF/XPS Document instead of File → Save As → PDF. Some Office installations export TOCs better through Export. If the issue persists, your TOC field codes may have been damaged — re-insert the TOC and re-export.
-
"My footnote text appears at the bottom of a different page than the reference mark." This usually happens when the body content shifted (you added or deleted paragraphs). Word should reposition automatically; if it didn't, click in the body, press F9 to update fields. Otherwise check whether you accidentally inserted a section break that's confining footnotes to the wrong section.
