TOC Behavior Quick Check

Project A — TOC Behavior Quick Check

⚡ Quick Check

Five Scenarios — Predict What Word Will Do

The Table of Contents is dynamic — it changes based on what's structurally in your document. Each scenario below presents a configuration; you predict what Word will produce. Each gives instant feedback. Aim to get all five right before starting the build (Section 3).

1The Manual-Bold "Heading"

Setup: A document has six "headings" the student wrote. Three of them have Heading 1 applied via the Styles gallery. The other three were made by selecting text and clicking B (Bold) and increasing the font size to 18pt — no Heading style applied. The student inserts an Automatic Table of Contents.

What appears in the TOC?

2The Renamed Heading

Setup: A 4-page report has a working TOC with five entries. The student then changes the wording of "Section 2: Methods" to "Section 2: Methodology" (just changes the heading text — doesn't touch the TOC). The student looks at the TOC immediately afterward.

What does the TOC show?

3The Customized Levels

Setup: A document uses Heading 1, Heading 2, AND Heading 3 (three nesting levels). The student opens Custom Table of Contents and sets Show levels to 2, then clicks OK to replace the existing TOC.

What does the new TOC contain?

4The Restart-Each-Page Footnote Setting

Setup: An 8-page document has 12 footnotes spread across the pages. The student opens the Footnote & Endnote dialog and changes Numbering from "Continuous" to "Restart each page." Click Apply.

What happens to the footnote numbers?

5The Footnote-to-Endnote Conversion

Setup: A document has 7 footnotes, all at the bottoms of various pages. The student is told the publisher requires endnotes (at the document end) instead. They open the Footnote & Endnote dialog and click Convert → "Convert all footnotes to endnotes" → OK.

What's the result?

📘 Why this Quick Check matters: Each scenario tests a specific Domain 4 behavior the MO-110 exam will check. Scenario 1 tests heading-style awareness. Scenario 2 tests the manual-update model (TOCs don't auto-refresh). Scenario 3 tests the Show Levels setting. Scenario 4 tests footnote numbering options. Scenario 5 tests the Convert feature. A student who gets 5/5 has the recognition pattern Domain 4 demands. Save these patterns; they recur on the exam.
