Update: Lesson 1.3: NLP. Computer Vision and Robotics
AI That Sees, Reads,
and Moves Through
the World
Three domains power almost every AI product you've ever used. This lesson breaks down Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and Robotics — and puts you inside each one.
Three Domains. Every AI App You've Ever Used.
Lessons 1 and 2 gave you the foundation. Now we apply it to the three biggest domains in AI engineering.
Every time Siri understands your voice, that's Natural Language Processing. Every time your phone identifies a friend's face in a photo, that's Computer Vision. Every time an Amazon warehouse robot grabs a package without human help, that's Robotics. These aren't separate fields — they're teammates, and the most powerful AI systems combine all three.
The Big Picture: A future home assistant robot will need NLP to understand your spoken request, Computer Vision to identify the object you want, and Robotics to physically navigate to it and pick it up. Each domain you master today is one piece of that integrated puzzle.
Choose a Domain to Explore
Select any domain below to dive into how it works, where it's used, and the real technology behind it.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
NLP is the branch of AI that gives computers the ability to read and generate human language — text or speech. It's behind every chatbot, translator, search engine, and voice assistant on the planet.
Key NLP Tasks
The Tech Behind It: Transformers
Modern NLP is powered by the Transformer architecture (introduced by Google in 2017). Unlike older models that read text word-by-word, Transformers process entire sentences at once using a mechanism called self-attention — which lets every word simultaneously "look at" every other word in the sentence to understand context. This is why GPT-4 and BERT can understand that "bank" means something different in "river bank" vs "savings bank." The scale of modern Transformers is staggering: GPT-4 has an estimated 1.7 trillion parameters.
Computer Vision (CV)
Computer Vision gives machines the ability to interpret and understand visual information — images, video, depth data — and take action based on what they see. It's the technology behind your phone's camera AI, self-driving cars, and medical imaging systems.
Key CV Tasks
The Tech Behind It: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)
Computer Vision is dominated by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). A CNN slides small filter windows across an image, detecting features at different scales. Early layers learn to detect edges and corners. Middle layers combine them into shapes. Deep layers recognize complex objects like faces or tumors. The same filter that learned to detect "circular edges" for eyes can be reused to detect wheels, coins, or planets — this reuse is called transfer learning and is why training a medical imaging AI doesn't require starting from scratch.
Robotics
Robotics combines AI with physical engineering to create machines that can perceive their environment, make intelligent decisions, and take physical action. Modern robotics ties NLP, Computer Vision, and machine learning together in a single system.

Reflection Questions
Lesson 3 Terms to Master
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- The AI branch focused on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language — text or speech. Powers chatbots, translation, search, and voice assistants.
- Transformer Architecture
- A neural network design that processes entire text sequences at once using self-attention. The foundation of GPT-4, BERT, and virtually every modern NLP system. Introduced by Google in 2017.
- Computer Vision (CV)
- The AI field enabling machines to interpret visual data — images and video. Used in medical imaging, autonomous vehicles, security systems, and manufacturing quality control.
- Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)
- A neural network architecture optimized for visual data. Uses sliding filter windows to detect features — edges in early layers, shapes in middle layers, full objects in deep layers.
- Object Detection
- A CV task that identifies multiple objects within an image AND draws bounding boxes around them with confidence scores. Foundation of self-driving car vision and security systems.
- SLAM
- Simultaneous Localization and Mapping. The algorithm that lets a robot build a map of an unknown environment while simultaneously tracking its own position within it.
- Sensor Fusion
- Combining data from multiple sensors (cameras, LIDAR, radar, GPS) into a single coherent world model. Critical for autonomous systems that must function reliably in all conditions.
- Transfer Learning
- Reusing a model trained on one task as the starting point for a different but related task. A CNN trained on millions of general images can be fine-tuned on medical scans with far less data.
Where These Domains Take Your Career
NLP, Computer Vision, and Robotics are the three most in-demand AI specializations in industry today. Each has a massive talent shortage — and the salary premiums reflect it. You don't need to be a researcher; you need to understand these systems well enough to deploy, manage, and direct them toward business goals.
Prove You've Got This
Five questions covering all three domains. Think carefully.
Lesson 3 Knowledge Check
1. JPMorgan's COiN system reads 40-page legal contracts and extracts key terms in seconds. Which AI domain does this represent?
2. A self-driving car uses cameras and LIDAR simultaneously to build a real-time 3D map of the road. Combining these inputs into one unified world model is called what?
3. A Roomba vacuum enters a new room, maps the entire layout while cleaning, and uses that map to plan efficient cleaning routes. The algorithm enabling this is called what?
4. BMW's factory AI system photographs each car and checks for paint defects, surface imperfections, and missing components faster than any human inspector. Which CV task is this MOST similar to?
5. The same CNN trained on millions of general internet images can be adapted to classify medical X-rays using only a small number of medical training examples. What ML concept makes this possible?
Three Domains Down. One Lesson to Go.
You now understand how AI reads language, sees the world, and moves through it. The final lesson covers the emerging trends reshaping all three domains right now — Generative AI, Edge AI, Explainability, and the future of autonomous systems.
