Lesson 3.1 – Community Challenge Project on PartyRock
Community Challenge Project on PartyRock
Build a real AI app that helps your community, using everything you learned in this course.
Project Overview
This is your capstone. You will build a real AI app on PartyRock that helps with a community challenge you care about, using everything from Units 1 and 2. This is the moment you become a builder, not just a user of AI.
Modules applied: 3.1 (build), and you will present it in 3.2 and reflect in 3.3.
What You Bring From Units 1 and 2
This capstone pulls together everything from the course. Here is what you bring:
What AI is, how it works, and how to use it responsibly.
Context, constraints, roles, examples, iteration, and evaluation.
Verify outputs, check for bias, and consider who is served or excluded.
Test with real inputs, get feedback, and improve.
📋 Project Requirements
You will build your app in PartyRock, AWS's no-code AI builder. Your project must meet all of the following. Read carefully before you start.
| Requirement | What It Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ✓ Pick a real challenge | Choose a local community problem an AI app could help with | Language access for new students |
| ✓ Design within limits | Decide who it helps and what a good, simple solution does | One clear job, kept small |
| ✓ Build on PartyRock | Make a functional Flow template or App that works | A guided helper app |
| ✓ Apply responsible AI | Verify outputs, check for bias, note limits, consider who is served and excluded | Add a 'check your sources' reminder |
| ✓ Iterate | Test with realistic inputs and improve from peer feedback | Fix prompts that confuse users |
💡 Starter Community-Challenge Ideas
Pick a real problem you care about. These are starting points, not the only options, choose your own if you have a better idea:
- Help new students or families who speak another language find what they need
- Make hard-to-find local info (events, resources, deadlines) easy to get
- Point people to mental-health or support resources in a friendly way
- Make something easier to use for people with different needs
🛠️ Tips for Building
- Plan before you build. Write the problem, who it helps, and what a good result looks like before you open PartyRock.
- Keep the scope small. The smallest version that genuinely helps someone beats a big idea you cannot finish.
- Build, then test. Try inputs a real user would type. Watch where it breaks or confuses.
- Run a responsible-AI checkpoint mid-build. Check for bias, verify what it outputs, and ask who it might leave out.
- Get feedback and iterate. Have a peer try it, then improve one thing at a time.
- Prepare your story. Be ready to explain the problem, your approach, and what AI did versus what you decided.
📊 Project Rubric: 50 Points
Type a score (0 to 10) in each row. The totals below update automatically.
| Category | What Earns Full Credit | Points Possible | Your Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Problem and Audience | Clearly identifies a real local challenge and who it helps. | 10 | |
| 2. Design and Build | A functional PartyRock app (Flow or App) that addresses the challenge within sensible limits. | 10 | |
| 3. Responsible AI | Verifies outputs, checks for bias, acknowledges limitations, and considers who is served and who is excluded. | 10 | |
| 4. Iteration and Testing | Tested with realistic inputs and improved based on testing and peer feedback. | 10 | |
| 5. Communication | Ready to clearly explain the problem, the approach, and key design decisions. | 10 |
Bonus: +2 Points
Add a thoughtful extra feature, a second iteration, or polish that lets your app serve more people.
✅ Before You Present
Run through every item below. If you can check them all, you are ready to present.
🚀 You're a Builder
You started this course using AI to get answers. You are finishing it having designed and built a tool that helps other people. That is a real leap, and it is exactly how builders begin.
Next, present your work in Lesson 3.2 and reflect on what is next in Lesson 3.3.
