Fundamentals of Generative AI

How generative AI creates new content, the difference between getting answers and building things, and why you always verify what it makes.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Explain how generative AI creates new content based on patterns in training data
  • Identify the difference between using AI to get answers and using AI to build things
  • Recognize that AI outputs are not always accurate and require human verification
  • Identify types of generative AI outputs and real-world examples

How Generative AI Creates

Generative AI is the kind that makes new things: text, images, and code. It learned patterns from huge amounts of data, and when you give it a prompt, it predicts the most likely next words, pixels, or lines of code. It is not copying one stored file; it is generating something new from patterns.

๐Ÿ’ก Key idea: Because it predicts rather than knows, generative AI can sound fluent and still be wrong.

Answers vs Building

There are two ways to use generative AI. You can ask it for an answer (you get one response), or you can build with it by putting it inside a tool you design that helps many people. This course is about the second one.

โ“
Getting answers
You ask, it replies. Helpful, but it stops with you.
๐Ÿ—๏ธ
Building
You design a tool that uses AI to help others, again and again.

Not Always Right: Verify

Generative AI sometimes states false things with total confidence. That is called a hallucination. It might invent a fact, a source, or a statistic. Treat every output as a draft and verify anything that matters against a reliable source.

Stay in charge. AI gives you a starting point. A human checks it and decides.

What It Can Make

Generative AI produces several kinds of output, and you will see them in real tools every day.

Output typeReal-world example
TextWriting, summaries, ideas, explanations
ImagesArt, designs, edited photos
CodeSmall programs and app features
Research helpDrafting and organizing, which you then verify

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป Activity: Try and Verify

Activity

Use a tool, then check its work

Generative AI is useful, but only if you check it. Try a tool and practice verifying what it gives you.

  1. Pick a question. Ask a generative AI tool something you can fact-check.
  2. Read the answer. Notice how confident it sounds, whether or not it is right.
  3. Verify it. Check the key claim against a reliable source. Was it correct?
  4. Decide. Would you trust this output in a project? Why or why not?
