IP Spoofing

IP Spoofing: Usually used in conjunction with another type of attack, IP spoofing is a technique used by attackers to disguise their real IP address. By doing this, hackers can make it appear as though their traffic is coming from a trusted source, which allows them to bypass IP-based security measures, such as firewalls or access control lists. IP spoofing is often used in conjunction with other attacks, such as DDoS attacks. Because IP spoofing involves falsifying the origin of traffic, it can be challenging to detect and block malicious activity. Attackers may use this technique to gain unauthorized access to restricted areas of your WordPress site, such as the admin dashboard, by tricking the system into believing the traffic is coming from a trusted IP address.

  • Block IP Addresses: Blocking IP addresses is a common security measure used to prevent unwanted or malicious traffic from accessing your website. By blocking specific IP addresses, you can prevent certain devices or users from accessing your site.

Blacklisting is the process of blocking IP addresses that have shown unusual or harmful activity. For example, if an IP address attempts to log in to your site multiple times with incorrect credentials, or if it tries to access restricted areas of your site, it might be blacklisted to prevent further attempts. Once blacklisted, any traffic coming from that IP address will be blocked from accessing your site.

Whitelisting is the opposite of blacklisting. It involves creating a list of trusted IP addresses that are allowed to access your site, while blocking all other IP addresses. This is a more restrictive approach but can be very effective in securing sensitive parts of your site, such as the admin dashboard. For example, if you and your team all work from known locations, you could whitelist your office’s IP addresses and block access from anywhere else.

Many security plugins provide features for blacklisting and whitelisting IP addresses. These plugins can automatically detect and block suspicious activity, or you can manually add IP addresses to your blacklist or whitelist based on your own criteria. This adds another layer of security, making it harder for unauthorized users to gain access to your site.
