Site Restoration Documentation

Site Name: Example.com
Date: August 22, 2024
Administrator: Edward Teach

1. Current Site Status

Overview of the Issue:

  • Problem Description:
The site started experiencing issues after a plugin update on August 20, 2024. The main problem is that the homepage is not displaying correctly. Instead of showing the usual content, the page loads with a "500 Internal Server Error." Additionally, several images on blog posts are missing, and some users have reported that they cannot log in to their accounts.
  • Error Messages Observed:
    • "500 Internal Server Error" on the homepage.
    • In the WordPress dashboard, the following error appears when attempting to access the media library: "Error establishing a database connection."
    • When activating the WP_DEBUG mode, the following errors are logged:
      • PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function my_custom_function() in /public_html/wp-content/themes/mytheme/functions.php
      • Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare(), called in /public_html/wp-content/plugins/myplugin/myplugin.php on line 45
  • Recent Changes:
    • On August 20, 2024, the following plugins were updated:
      • MyCustomPlugin (v2.3.1 to v2.4.0)
      • SEOOptimizer (v3.5.2 to v3.6.0)
      • ContactFormMaster (v1.2.5 to v1.3.0)
    • A new theme update for "MyTheme" was also applied on the same day.
    • A custom code snippet was added to functions.php to modify the footer layout.
  • Actions Taken:
    • Disabled "MyCustomPlugin" to see if it resolved the homepage issue, but the problem persisted.
    • Rolled back the SEOOptimizer plugin to the previous version (v3.5.2) without resolving the issues.
    • Enabled WordPress Debug Mode to identify any errors (see error messages above).
    • Reverted the custom code snippet in functions.php to its previous state, which did not resolve the issue.

2. Backup Details

Backup Selected for Restoration:

  • Backup Date: August 18, 2024
  • Backup Type: Full Backup
  • Backup Plugin Used: UpdraftPlus
  • Included in Backup:
    • Files: Themes, Plugins, Media, WordPress Core Files
    • Database: Posts, Pages, User Data, Site Settings
  • Reason for Selection:
This backup was chosen because it was created just before the recent updates and changes were made. The site was functioning correctly at this time, with no reported issues or errors. Restoring from this backup should revert the site to a stable state before the problematic updates were applied.

3. Restoration Plan

  • Restoration Scheduled For: August 23, 2024, 2:00 AM (Low-Traffic Period)
  • Notified Stakeholders:
    • Email sent to site users and clients on August 21, 2024, informing them of the upcoming maintenance and potential downtime.
    • A notice was posted on the site’s social media channels and temporary maintenance page.

4. Post-Restoration Follow-Up

Verification Checklist After Restoration:

  • Homepage: Verify that the "500 Internal Server Error" is resolved, and the homepage loads correctly.
  • Media Library: Ensure all images and media files are accessible and display correctly in blog posts.
  • User Accounts: Test user login functionality to confirm that users can log in without issues.
  • Theme and Plugins: Check that the "MyTheme" theme and all plugins are functioning as expected, without causing errors.

Additional Notes:

  • If the restoration resolves the issue, document any additional steps needed to update plugins or the theme without reintroducing the problem.
  • If the issues persist after restoration, consider reverting to the backup made before restoration (documented above) and exploring alternative troubleshooting steps.
